Coachella: Memorable moments from the past

In April i will be making my 10th trip to the desert for the Coachella Music & Arts Festival. It certainly has changed from the early days (more people, more days, 2 weekends!). With the increased popularity of the event it has negatively affected the vibe and the crowd. Back in the day Coachella was OURS — a mecca for those of us who truly loved MUSIC and used it as an opportunity to discover new and old artists. Today Coachella is THEIRS — a profitable behemoth of a festival filled with too many drunk bros and trashed young girls who only came to “party”…you’ll find most of them near the sahara tent, but sometimes they venture out and ruin it for the ones who came to Coachella to see live MUSIC. I’ve gotten used to the riffraff , but it’s always a buzzkill when you’re really enjoying something and those assholes who don’t care only come so they can “party”.  Unfortunately, the past 2 years were a bit underwhelming (as a whole) but yet i keep coming back hoping for something magical and memorable to happen again. As the date approaches, i’ve been reminiscing about the most memorable moments i’ve had the privilege to experience at this event. Its those moments that keep me coming back to this ever-expanding music event. So to get myself pumped up for Coachella #10 i’ve been searching the internet for videos of those moments from the past…been adding them to this YouTube playlist…more will be added, but here it is

VIDEO – Arcade Fire at Coachella 2005 & 2011

The first time i saw Arcade Fire live was their first time playing Coachella…Sunday May 1, 2005. It was and still is one of the best performances i’ve seen. I immediately was hooked and from that moment on they became my favorite band. When you watch the video  (below) from that show you’ll see i wasn’t the only one. The crowd grew larger and larger with each song they played and the energy was palpable. It was only a matter of time that they would return to headline the festival…and they did, 6 years later on Saturday April 16, 2011. One of the most amazing nights of my life and one of the best headlining performances i’ve seen at Coachella through the years. Honestly, no other headliners since them has been able to reproduce that energy and excitement…at least not in my experience. It wasn’t just their performance, but it was the way their music just made the whole crowd feel good…euphoric…You just felt it…everywhere…and it stuck with us after the show had ended…there was a moment i will never forget as the crowd was slowly making its way out of the venue and we all started humming/singing the “ooooOoooooOOOo” part of  “Rebellion (Lies)”….it was beautiful and it made me so happy because THATS what music should do. and it did that night. Watch for yourself in the video playlist below

VIDEO 2 – “Wake Up” Coachella 2011

Looking forward to another memorable performance as they return to headline at Coachella 2014.

I won’t believe it, til I can feel it

the XX “Try”

We bide our time
Though the time is fine
Oh to be there, I could be there
Say you’ll be there

You know the way, I
Can’t resist you, I
Said to myself I’ll try

Why do we waste time
Hiding it inside?
I want you to be mine

Now it’s dead and gone
You say what you would’ve done
You would’ve been there,
I wish you’d been there,
I needed you there

And if we try once more
Would you give me it all?
I won’t believe it,
‘Til I can feel it

Can you feel it?

You know the way, I
Can’t resist you, I
Said to myself I’ll try

CAT POWER: She gets it…

Those who know Cat Power (Chan Marshall) would agree, she’s evolved beautifully. Musically, her sound has grown richer and more refined over the years. Chan will be releasing a new album, SUN on Sept 4th via Matador, which is already rumored to be her best yet.
Nevertheless, i still have a fondness for the raw emotion and sparse sound of her early songs. There’s a pure vulnerability in her singing that i find so comforting…like she gets “it”…and by “it” i refer to “what i feel/think/wish/hope/fear”.
To honor her influence in the soundtrack of my life, here are some lyrical (and literal) snapshots of Cat Power over the years. (You can listen to these and other songs HERE):

“One absence of truth
And one horrible thing I saw
What you truly wanted to become
And who you thought I was” – In This Hole

“After this there will be no one,
After this there will be so many good ones
After this there will be less interest,
After this there will be no more good clean fun”  – Good Clean Fun

“Intuition knocked again, Fair
Only you should know by now there’s
Not enough to go around
But I never go that way
Other half of me says I should” – Enough

“Holding on for something
Have you ever held on
Holding on for someone
Feels like holding on too long
Have you ever held on” – He Turns Down

“Do you remember
That night, at context
Making up shit, like we were animals?
We made no sense, No sense
We had no sex”  – No Sense

“Never give up, no, never give up
If you’re looking for something easy
You might as well give it up.” – Say

“I once was lost, but now I’m found
Was blind, but now I see you.
How selfish of you
To believe in the meaning of all the bad dreaming.
Metal heart, you’re not hiding
Metal heart, you’re not worth a thing” -Metal Heart

“See you looking through me
Like you’ve unzipped the zipper
You hold the big picture so well
Can’t you see that we’re going to hell
…Couldn’t park that fucking car,
Couldn’t part from you” – Back of Your Head

“Oh how time flies
With crystal clear eyes, And cold as cold
When you’re ending with diamond eyes”
Cross Bones Style

“They never owned it
And you never owed it to them anyway
I don’t blame you” – I Don’t Blame You

“…this is why I am leaving
And this is why I can’t see you no more.
This is why I am lying when I say
That I don’t love you no more.” – Good Woman

“Come along Fool,
A direct hit to the sense you’re disconnected
It’s not that it’s bad, it’s not that it’s death
It’s just that it’s on the tip of your tongue and you’re so silent” – Fool

“I’m not that hot new chick
And if you won’t let me run with it
We’re on to your same old trick
Get up and run away with it” – He War

“We can all be free
Maybe not with words
Maybe not with a look
But with your mind” – Maybe Not

“I was hypnotized
By your fairy eyes
Like a tiger in the dark
You were hungry from the start”
I’ve Been Thinking

“Once I wanted to be the greatest
Two fists of solid rock
With brains that could explain any feeling”
The Greatest

“Will you terrorize this, with your perfect lips” – Living Proof

“But I don’t know you
And i don’t need you
And i don’t want you anymore”
Empty Shell

“Half of it is innocent, the other half is wise
The whole damn thing makes no sense
I wish I could tell you a lie…” – Hate

“Hated to see you sad when I left
There’s just no good in that but the good part was
That I came at all ‘cuz I don’t venture out…
Can you tell me if there is something better
‘Cuz you know there always is” – Love and Communication

We are all meant to shine

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate…it is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, “who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?” Actually, who are you not to be?…Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine…It’s not just in some of us, it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
